Yesterday was National Album Day.

So of course, due respects were paid to the best-selling examples. On a countdown on Radio 2, we heard (yet again) Sgt. Pepper, Thriller, Dark Side of the Moon and Rumours. Like millions of others, I’ve bought all these albums twice. Once on vinyl and again on CD. They’re all great but I was always a big fan of the K-Tel compilation. This was the first one I ever bought. In fact, it was the first LP I ever bought – in John Menzies on Wembley High Road with a record token I’d received for my twelfth birthday. I don’t think I ever bought a better compilation – or indeed, a better album than this.
