But last night, through the magic of Netflix, I watched Twenty Feet From Stardom, that superb documentary about the lives of backing singers. These – I was going to say “unsung” – heroes and heroines have added their magnificent talents to countless famous artists’ hits and live performances but very few people had ever heard of them. Yet there was no jealousy or rancour because, in the main, these performers had no desire to be famous. Their joy and fulfilment came from singing, not stardom. But one of them did step out into the limelight: that Young American behind Bowie in the blue suit and oversized collar. Of course he became a star. His name was Luther Vandross.
