Was sixty years ago yesterday when Buddy Holly perished in an air crash aged just 22. At an age when most kids are just leaving “uni”, he’d pretty much invented popular music and become the most influential artist of all time. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who and Led Zeppelin all cite him as their inspiration. And they, of course, were the inspiration for thousands of others. Buddy Holly was the first famous musician to play the electric guitar and The Crickets were the first group that we’d recognise as a “band”. Buddy was such a gifted and pioneering guitarist, singer, songwriter and arranger that you only have to listen to any band to from the last sixty years to hear something they’re doing that he did first. Oh Boy was just his second hit. And seriously, does popular music get much better than this?
The day the music died.
