And yet Tom Jones, Ray Davies and George Benson are the headline acts at this year’s Greenwich Music Festival. I’m a huge fan of all three but I honestly don’t know if their continued stardom is a good thing. What does it say about contemporary talent that these old troupers should still be headlining so long after what should have been their sell-by dates? There’ll be one man in his seventies telling a girl he wants to be with her all day and all of the night. Another, even older, inviting girls to help themselves to his lips, to his love. Isn’t it just a tad undignified? But one of the all-time great jazz guitarists playing this tune on a summer’s evening? Now that’s more like it.
