Flying visit to the Edinburgh festival yesterday. My daughter and some of her friends had taken a little show up there and that was all the excuse I needed. The festival is a wonderful thing because it’s impossible to be bored. There’s so much to see and I managed to pack in five shows before having to run for the 18.30 back to Kings Cross. But although people come in their thousands to watch or to be watched, nobody actually comes from Edinburgh. In fact, this city’s biggest contribution to popular culture took place between 1974 and 1976. The Bay City Rollers were a proper sensation. Okay, so they couldn’t actually sing or play any instruments but aided by seasoned songwriters and session men, they made some great records. I cannot believe the festival doesn’t annually honour Edinburgh’s most famous sons.
