Greed is the only sin.

Practically every other sin is a variation on it. People are mean because they’re greedy, they steal and have affairs because they’re greedy. The most unpleasant right-wing capitalists and left-wing trade unionists are invariably motivated by greed. But greed’s one redeeming feature is that it tends to bring down those who are most susceptible to it. Sam Allardyce is a classic example. A salary of £3 million wasn’t enough for him. He was trying to make an extra £400,000 in a business deal which turned out to be bogus. Greed has cost him the job of England manager after just one game. The job he’d coveted all his life. He’ll never work again. From now on, he’ll find it impossible to get the one thing he appears to prize above everything else. Good riddance to him.
