Bruce Spingsteen is 66 today. I was never a big fan. Not because I didn’t like him but because I didn’t want to be a “Sprinsteen Fan”. Back in the 80s, they were like a cult, referring to their idol as “The Boss” and treating every gig like a quasi-religious experience. I always knew he was a phenomenal live performer and now regret not going to see him at Wembley Arena when he was at the peak of his powers. I just couldn’t bear the thought of being surrounded by about 12,000 of “them”. When I was DJ-ing, and the crowd were largely white, male and middle-class, I was always being asked “Got any Bruce?” and I’d play this – one of Springsteen’s finest. Though I knew it wasn’t quite what they meant.
Happy Birthday, Bruce.
