Heavy metal went into mourning last week with the death of Lemmy, legendary frontman of Motorhead. But on the same day, Meadowlark Lemon, another global legend also passed away. Lemon was clown prince of the Harlem Globetrotters and one the most skilful and entertaining basketball players the world has ever seen. In the 1970s, the Harlem Globetrotters were huge and did a show every year at Wembley Arena. Our primary school teacher, Mr Webber, organised a trip and persuaded Brian Quinn’s dad, a bus driver, to borrow a Routemaster from Cricklewood Garage to take us. It was supposed to just be our class but everyone’s siblings, including three of my sisters, piled on to that bus to see Meadowlark Lemon. Hanging off the running board all the way home remains one of my favourite childhood memories. Imagine that happening now, and imagine if Mr. Webber had been a Motorhead fan.
You heard about Lemmy but what about Lemon?
