Though he’s best remembered for What Becomes of the Brokenhearted. That song has been officially recognised as a “Bona Fide Motown Classic” and has therefore been overplayed for the last 30 years on every oldies radio station in the world. Great as it is, I couldn’t care less if I never heard it again. But this underrated soul gem is a different matter. Big hit in 1980 but rarely played since. Jimmy Ruffin died yesterday so I’m sure his songs are now being played everywhere. This one will no doubt be re-appreciated. I just hope it doesn’t now get imprisoned on every station’s playlist and suffer the same fate as What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.
Jimmy Ruffin’s finest hour.
