I’ve always loved this underrated gem, but it was only when I heard it the other night for the first time in decades, that I realised why. It’s the arrangement. No guitar, no bass, no drums, no keyboards, in fact none of the usual components of a Top Twenty hit. Just a string quartet and an extraordinary voice. I can’t think of any other pop arrangement that just comprises voice and strings. I was about to say “Oh, they don’t make them like this anymore” but they didn’t even make them like this in 1972.
Making Arrangements.
