Controversial view that will be immediately challenged by the “All men are bastards” brigade but it’s based on one undeniable fact. The vast majority of yearning love songs are written by men about women. Many by men whose hearts have been broken by women. Even those sung by women about men were often written to be sung the other way round. Of course men can be equally unkind and they break women’s hearts all the time. But when that happens, the heartbroken woman can talk quite freely about it to sympathetic female friends. The heartbroken man is reluctant to do that, for fear of being seen as soppy or weak. Hence the thousands and thousands of male-penned love songs. Here’s a perfect example and we’ll play it because Phil Collins is 64 today. Let’s hope he’s having a very happy birthday. And that another woman hasn’t broken his heart.
Why men are softer than women.
