I’m not talking about the classic Bobby Womack album from which this was the standout track, I’m talking about Pam Ayres, this morning’s castaway on Desert Island Discs. I met her once at a recording studio and she was exactly as you’d want her to be. Warm, kind, clever and funny. The only surprise is that she’s about 6ft tall. I still think Pam Ayres is seriously underrated. Her poetry is rhythmically simple and makes you laugh about everyday things, which is why its intelligence and perspicacity is often overlooked. She can’t sing, act or play a musical instrument and she’s not a particularly gifted performer. Which only goes to proves how gifted a poet she is. Her continued success is solely down to the quality of her writing. It is, and always has been, just her imagination.
The Poet.
