And do you know why? Because I was 2 years and 11 months old. Precisely the age Caitlin Moran was when she claims she first saw Kate Bush performing Wuthering Heights on Top of the Pops. On Desert Island Discs this morning, she remembered it so well. It was 1979, she said,(it was 1978) and Top of the Pops was on at 7.00 (try 7.30). I was so disappointed. I’ve always been a big fan of her writing and the way, through sheer talent and hard work, she went from an impoverished childhood to glamour, fame and fortune. I’d always thought she was a wonderful role model. Now I’m not so sure. If she can tell a lie so brazen and so easily refuted, what else has she lied about? But maybe that’s been the secret of her success. As the old saying goes, all fiction is autobiography. And all autobiography is fiction.
I don’t remember this on Top of the Pops.
