Just before 11.00, shoppers were asked over the Tannoy to observe the two-minute silence. Everyone duly did and it was a very strange sight. People just standing stock-still and silent with their trolleys in the aisles. However, quite a few people arrived during the hiatus. Some were chatting happily in foreign tongues but suddenly stopped, completely bewildered at the sight of silent, stationary shoppers. They looked even more confused when the Tannoy announcement thanked them and allowed them to carry on with their shopping. Isn’t it great that we still observe this respectful tradition? Though this morning, some of yesterday’s observants will still have no idea what it was.
Surreal moment in Tesco yesterday.
