That’s what we were told by careers teachers at school but they turned to be so, so wrong. Traditional branches were ruthlessly replaced by distant call centres, including the first two to hold my constantly overdrawn account. Barclays Bank in Piccadilly is now a famous restaurant called The Wolseley. Barclays in Camden Town is now the equally famous Jazz Cafe. I’m off to the ex-Barclays in Camden tonight to hear Trevor Nelson drop some old-skool funk like this. He’s a proper DJ who served a long apprenticeship as the “Madhatter”, playing countless clubs and warehouse parties, so it’ll be good to see him playing out again. If his career is anything to go by, don’t be tempted by the bank, kids. Working as a DJ might be boring but it’s a job for life.
