James Blunt has recently been transformed into a cool, cult hero because of his brilliant ripostes to vicious Internet trolls. My favourite was to a tweet that said “I wish James Blunt was dead”. “I was”, our hero replied, “But on the third day, you’ll never guess what happened”. But there was always something of the hero about Blunt. He spent six years in the Army, rising to the rank of Captain and seeing active service with NATO forces in Kosovo. So nasty taunts from cowardly trolls were never likely to trouble him. Any more than that spiteful old curmudgeon Paul Weller bothered him by saying that he’d rather eat his own shit than duet with Blunt at the Brits. So as he celebrates his 40th birthday this weekend, isn’t it great to see Blunt having the last laugh? Unlike Weller, who wouldn’t know the meaning of the word.
