RIP Greg Lake. One third of Emerson Lake & Palmer but best known for his solo Christmas classic “I Believe in Father Christmas”. It should have been the big Christmas No.1 of 1975 but was kept off the top spot by a once-in-a-lifetime record called Bohemian Rhapsody. As a tribute to Greg Lake, every commercial radio station in the country will today be playing “I Believe in Father Christmas”. But if he’d died in the middle of summer, what would they have done? Very considerate of him to die in December. It’s a wonderful piece of music but I’m sure you’ve already heard it ad finitum today. So instead let’s savour the piece of Prokofiev on which it was based.
