In truth, there was probably only ever one and it was near my school. Such a weird combo that I sometimes think I’ve made it up but no, I spent a lot of time and a lot of money in there – none of it on fruit and veg. It comprised a dusty old greengrocer’s at the front and an even dustier old record shop at the back. If you could overlook the squalor and the sacks of potatoes, it was a treasure trove of old vinyl. The spectacularly rude proprietor would just make up the prices according to his mood, often demanding outrageous sums or sometimes refusing to sell you anything at all. I must have caught him on a good day because he let me have this rare slice of sixties groove for 50p. He even chucked in a free Granny Smith.
